Background of the Study
Undernutrition among the elderly is a growing public health concern, particularly in low-resource settings where access to a balanced diet is limited (Aliyu & Musa, 2024). Aging is associated with physiological changes that affect appetite, metabolism, and nutrient absorption, increasing the risk of undernutrition (Olawale et al., 2023). Additionally, socio-economic factors, limited healthcare access, and chronic illnesses contribute to malnutrition among senior citizens.
In Kano State, the prevalence of undernutrition among older adults remains inadequately documented despite its potential impact on morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. Undernourished seniors are more prone to infections, frailty, and cognitive decline. This study investigates the extent of undernutrition among the elderly population in Kano State and the factors contributing to it, aiming to provide evidence-based recommendations for improving their nutritional status.
Statement of the Problem
Despite increased awareness of nutritional needs in aging populations, undernutrition remains a significant issue among senior citizens in Kano State. Many elderly individuals suffer from inadequate dietary intake due to financial constraints, poor dietary habits, and health-related challenges. However, research on the extent and determinants of undernutrition among this demographic in Kano is limited. This study seeks to address this gap by assessing the prevalence of undernutrition and identifying key risk factors.
Objectives of the Study
To determine the prevalence of undernutrition among senior citizens in Kano State.
To identify socio-economic and health-related factors contributing to undernutrition.
To propose interventions for improving the nutritional status of older adults.
Research Questions
What is the prevalence of undernutrition among senior citizens in Kano State?
What are the main socio-economic and health factors influencing undernutrition?
What measures can be implemented to improve the nutritional well-being of elderly individuals?
Research Hypotheses
Undernutrition is significantly prevalent among senior citizens in Kano State.
Socio-economic and health-related factors contribute to undernutrition in the elderly.
Targeted nutritional interventions can reduce undernutrition prevalence among older adults.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on elderly individuals in Kano State, assessing their nutritional status and identifying key risk factors. Limitations include self-reported dietary intake, which may introduce recall bias, and potential variations in nutritional needs based on health conditions.
Definitions of Terms
